Will BRICS Nations Join Forces Against Trump’s Tariff War? What We Know So Far

Trump’s Tariff Hike Sparks BRICS Diplomatic Push.

US President Donald Trump’s move to slap 50% tariffs on Brazilian and Indian goods has set off an unusual burst of BRICS diplomacy, raising questions about a possible united front.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has urged the bloc to deliver a coordinated response to what he calls “unilateral” US actions. While no member has formally backed the proposal, the past 48 hours have seen a string of high-level calls.

On Thursday, Lula spoke with Indian PM Narendra Modi on tariffs and the global economy, while South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa phoned Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Friday, Putin separately called China’s Xi Jinping and Modi. All three are expected to meet Xi later this month at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin, a possible venue for tariff talks.

Current US tariff rates on BRICS nations:

  • Brazil, India – 50%
  • China, South Africa – 30%
  • Russia – ~20%, with threat of more sanctions

Trump has branded BRICS “anti-US” and accused it of attacking the dollar — comments that may only strengthen calls for a coordinated BRICS response.
