World Sexual Health Day: India Must Break the Silence on Wellness.

As India marks World Sexual Health Day, the rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) highlights an uncomfortable truth — silence, stigma, and lack of awareness remain the country’s biggest barriers to sexual wellness.

Dr. Divya Vora, Gynecologist and Obstetrician, explains why education and open dialogue are as important as access to care.

Awareness Still Missing

“Awareness around STIs, consent, and safe sex is still very limited,” says Dr. Vora. “Many patients come in with advanced symptoms simply because they didn’t know whom to approach, or felt embarrassed to speak up.” This culture of silence, she adds, continues to compromise people’s health and confidence.

Access Is Growing, But Education Lags

Young Indians are more willing than ever to explore sexual wellness products, thanks to the privacy of digital platforms. But Dr. Vora cautions that access without knowledge is not enough.
“Products are easier to find, but the education around safe and responsible use hasn’t kept pace. Both need to move together if we want real progress.”

Why Normalization Matters

For Dr. Vora, sexual wellness is inseparable from overall health.
“It shouldn’t be treated as taboo. When people talk openly, it helps prevent STIs, strengthens relationships, and builds confidence. Normalizing these conversations is essential for a healthier society.”

Digital Misinformation Risks

In today’s smartphone-first world, many turn to the internet for answers — often at the cost of accuracy.
“Misinformation spreads quickly online,” warns Dr. Vora. “That’s why credible, fact-based platforms are so important. They give people reliable guidance and reduce the stigma that keeps them silent.”

The Road Ahead

India has improved access, but awareness and normalization remain the missing links.
As Dr. Vora puts it: “Sexual health is health. The more openly we talk, the more we empower people to live healthier, more confident lives.”
