Copenhagen Dethrones Vienna to Become World’s Most Liveable City in 2025; Indian Cities Rank Low.
Copenhagen has claimed the title of the world’s most liveable city in 2025, overtaking Vienna, which held the top position for three consecutive years. The ranking comes from the 2025 Global Liveability Index released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), which assesses cities based on factors such as stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
Vienna and Zurich now share the second spot, while the top 10 list is dominated by cities in Western Europe, Australia, and Japan.

Indian Cities: Far Behind
India’s major urban centres continue to struggle in global rankings:
- New Delhi ranks 120th
- Mumbai follows at 121st
These rankings reflect ongoing issues such as pollution, overpopulation, uneven infrastructure, and healthcare challenges.
Declines Across Global Cities
Some major cities witnessed significant drops in rankings:
- London fell from 45th to 54th
- Manchester dropped from 43rd to 52nd
- Edinburgh declined from 59th to 64th
The report attributes these declines to growing civil unrest, housing crises, and urban infrastructure strains.
