Zelensky Affirms India’s Support Following Trump’s “Primary Funders of War” Remark

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has clarified India’s position in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, seemingly countering former US President Donald Trump’s recent claims.

In a Fox News interview, Zelensky said India is “mostly with us,” while acknowledging some concerns over its energy dealings with Russia. Trump had recently called India and China the “primary funders” of the ongoing war in Ukraine, citing their continued purchase of Russian oil. Zelensky emphasized that although energy trade with Russia poses challenges, he remains optimistic that India will adjust its approach.

“We need to strengthen ties between Europe and India. It’s important not to alienate India, and I believe they will eventually change their stance on Russian energy,” Zelensky said. He noted that China’s position is harder to influence, stating, “With China, it’s more difficult because supporting Russia aligns with their current interests.”

Zelensky also remarked that Trump could potentially influence China’s role in the conflict. “I think President Trump can change Xi Jinping’s attitude toward this war, because China doesn’t seem inclined to end it on its own,” he told Fox News’ Special Report.

These comments came shortly after Trump’s UN General Assembly address, in which he criticised India and China for allegedly funding the war, amid the backdrop of a recent 50% tariff on Indian imports implemented on August 27.
