‘70-80% MPs watch porn’: Pappu Yadav doubles down on controversial remarks

Independent MP Pappu Yadav has sparked a fresh political storm, claiming that “70–80 per cent of politicians watch porn”, even as his earlier remarks on the alleged exploitation of women in politics continue to draw sharp criticism.

The controversy comes in the wake of the defeat of the Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill in Parliament — linked to the Women’s Reservation and Delimitation proposals — after it failed to secure the required two-thirds majority.

The Purnia MP questioned what he described as deep-rooted gender bias in public life, arguing that women continue to face systemic barriers in politics. Speaking to the media, he alleged that many women are unable to pursue political careers without facing exploitation.

Row intensifies

The controversy escalated further during his visit to Malda, where Yadav defended his remarks and hit back at those who issued notices against him. He reiterated his claim about politicians consuming explicit content and challenged authorities to investigate him as well.

Yadav maintained that his statements were aimed at highlighting the challenges faced by women in politics. He alleged that male politicians often exploit women aspirants and claimed that cases of misconduct involving politicians reflect a broader problem within the system.

Women’s quota debate

Yadav’s comments come amid a heated national debate over women’s representation following the setback to the Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill.

The proposed legislation sought to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies from the 2029 elections, linked to the delimitation exercise. However, the bill failed to pass despite 298 members voting in favour and 230 opposing it.

The remarks have triggered strong reactions across the political spectrum, with critics calling them inappropriate and offensive, while others say they have reignited conversations around the treatment of women in public life.
