Maharashtra Building Collapse: 9 Killed in Bhiwandi, Several Feared Trapped Under Debris

A building collapse in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi has claimed at least nine lives, with several people feared trapped under the rubble. The incident occurred on Thursday night, triggering a massive rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police and local authorities.

A portion of the four-storey Kohinoor Apartment collapsed while work was reportedly underway at the site. Officials said the building had already been declared unsafe and residents had been asked to vacate the premises due to its deteriorating condition.

Rescue Teams Race Against Time

NDRF personnel and emergency teams are searching through the debris to locate survivors. A woman was among the first people rescued from the rubble and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Authorities initially reported three deaths, but the toll later increased to nine as rescuers recovered more bodies from the collapsed structure. Officials have warned that the death toll could rise further if more people are found trapped.

Unsafe Buildings Under Scanner

The incident has raised fresh concerns over dangerous and abandoned structures in Bhiwandi, where several buildings have reportedly been classified as unsafe by civic authorities. Bhiwandi Mayor Narayan Chowdhary urged people living in such buildings to leave immediately.

“Many such buildings in Bhiwandi have been declared dangerous. While rescue efforts are underway, I appeal to people living in these structures to vacate them immediately,” he said. Rescue operations remain underway as teams continue searching the debris and authorities assess the safety of nearby buildings.
