Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, upon his election victory, repeated his persistent warnings that America “wants our land, our resources, our country.”

He declared in his victory speech following the Canadian federal election, “President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us, that will never ever happen.” Mark Carney’s electoral victory was heavily influenced by the charged atmosphere of US-Canada relations. His campaign gained momentum amidst Donald Trump’s controversial remarks regarding Canada’s sovereignty.

Canada now finds itself at a “hinge moment” of history, Mark Carney said, adding, “Our old relationship of integration with the US is now over.” Describing it as a tragedy, he said, “We are over the shock of the American betrayal, we have to take care of each other.”

Cautioning Canadians, he further said, “Humility is also about recognising that one of the responsibilities of government is to prepare for the worst.”

Mark Carney Says He Will Speak To Donald Trump In Coming Days

Mark Carney said that he and Donald Trump will “discuss the future of two sovereign and independent nations” in the coming days while his government will strengthen partnerships with countries in Europe and elsewhere.

If the US no longer wants to be at the forefront of world leadership, Canada will be, he said, adding, “This is Canada, we decide what happens here.”

Path Ahead For Canada Will Be Challenging, Mark Carney Warns

Mark Carney warned that the challenges Canada faces will be difficult, adding that major change is always concerning. Stating that he has faith in Canada, he said that the country’s strength lies in our unity and working together.

“Because Canada is more than a nation, we are and always will be a federation. We’re not always perfect, but we strive to be good. We strive to do things because they’re right, not because they’re easy,” he said.
