Pat Cummins on Sam Konstas’ WTC Final Snub: “He Has a Long Career Ahead”
Australia captain Pat Cummins has reassured young batting talent Sam Konstas of his future in Test cricket despite the 19-year-old missing out on selection for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa at Lord’s.
Konstas, who impressed during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year, was left out of the playing XI in favour of the more experienced Marnus Labuschagne, who has been pushed up as a makeshift opener. Cummins addressed the selection decision ahead of the high-stakes clash, stating that while Konstas was unlucky to miss out, his time would come.
“He’s really young and has a long career ahead of him,” Cummins said. “Even if he’s not playing, just being in the squad at this stage is a great learning opportunity. It’s something the selectors are always balancing—exposure versus experience.”
Cummins also pointed out that Australia’s Test setup is currently stacked with promising fringe players. “You’ve got guys like Bo Webster and Josh Inglis who are just starting out, and Cam Green is returning as well. It’s a good problem to have,” he added.
Konstas’ Meteoric Rise
Konstas made headlines during the BGT series with a composed 60 on debut in Melbourne, followed by gritty knocks of 23 and 22 in Sydney. But it wasn’t just his batting that caught attention—his fearless on-field exchanges with Jasprit Bumrah and the infamous shoulder bump from Virat Kohli showcased his aggressive edge and temperament under pressure.
Yet, despite the early promise, Konstas has been on the periphery since. He was left out of the Sri Lanka tour in favour of Travis Head and now finds himself out of contention for the WTC Final.
What’s Next?
While missing out on Lord’s may feel like a setback, selectors see the upcoming Ashes and the home summer as potential windows for Konstas’ return. Until then, the burden of top-order resilience falls to Labuschagne and Head, especially against South Africa’s fiery pace attack.
Australia’s Playing XI for the WTC Final:
