Delhi Scorches at 45°C: IMD Issues Orange Alert, Health Ministry Warns of Heat Risks.
As Delhi braces for soaring temperatures reaching up to 45°C, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, indicating a severe and prolonged heatwave sweeping across northwestern India. Night temperatures are also expected to stay high, averaging around 29°C.
In light of the extreme heat, the Union Health Ministry has released a public advisory urging residents to take necessary precautions. “Avoid going out during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of safe fluids, and eat light meals,” the ministry advised in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
People are especially cautioned against leaving children or pets in parked vehicles, even briefly, as heat buildup can prove fatal. The ministry also warned of heatstroke symptoms such as high body temperature, confusion, or unconsciousness, urging citizens to seek immediate medical attention in such cases. Emergency services are available at 108 or 102.
Health officials have recommended wearing loose, breathable clothing, staying in shaded or cool areas, and keeping an eye on vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children.
