Beat the Heat: Why Water Should Be Your Go-To Drink This Summer.
Summer brings sunshine, holidays, and seasonal treats—but it also brings dangerous heat. As temperatures climb, staying cool is about more than shade and fans. It begins with staying hydrated.
Water: Your Body’s Cooling System
While chilled sodas and juices might seem refreshing, they can’t match the power of water. “During a heatwave, drinking enough water is essential,” says Dr. Anjana Kaliya, dietitian at Bloom Clinic, Dwarka. “It regulates body temperature and helps prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke.”
Why You Lose More Fluids in Summer
Hot weather means more sweating—and with it, a loss of both fluids and vital salts like sodium and potassium. “Sweating leads to electrolyte loss, which can affect your muscles, nerves, and even brain function,” warns Dr. Prashant Sinha, Head of Emergency at PSRI Hospital.
Even light daily activities can cause hidden water loss, so hydration is important even when you’re not physically active.
Signs You’re Dehydrated
Dehydration can sneak up on you. Common warning signs include:
- Dry mouth or lips
- Dark urine
- Headaches or cramps
- Dizziness or fatigue
- Reduced urination
“If you notice these, your body is already low on fluids,” says Dr. Kaliya. “Don’t wait to feel thirsty—stay ahead by drinking water regularly.”
Simple Tips to Stay Hydrated, Hydration doesn’t have to be hard.
- Start your day with 1–2 glasses of water
- Drink a glass every hour, even without thirst
- Sip water 30 minutes before meals and an hour after
- Carry a reusable bottle wherever you go
Tired of plain water? Add lemon, mint, or cucumber for flavor. You can also get water through fruits and salads.
Best Foods and Drinks to Keep You Cool
Besides water, other great hydrating options include:
- Buttermilk (chaach)
- Coconut water
- Lemon water
- Barley water (jau sattu)
“Drinks like these restore minerals and keep the body cool,” says Dr. Kaliya.
Snack on water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and berries. They’re refreshing, nutritious, and help meet your hydration needs.
