Box Office Battle Heats Up: Kajol’s Maa Trails Behind Vishnu Manchu’s Kannappa.
Kajol’s much-anticipated return to the big screen with the mythological horror film Maa created buzz ahead of its release on June 27. Despite the pre-release hype and her three-year hiatus, the film opened to a modest start but showed signs of life over the weekend.
According to early estimates from industry tracker Sacnilk, Maa has earned ₹19.90 crore in its first four days. While not a blockbuster by numbers, the film’s unique blend of horror and mythology has found appreciation among a section of the audience.
Day-wise Box Office Performance: Maa
Day 1 (Friday): ₹4.65 crore
Day 2 (Saturday): ₹6 crore
Day 3 (Sunday): ₹6.71 crore
Day 4 (Monday): ₹2.25 crore
The film witnessed a typical Monday dip, with Hindi occupancy dropping to 12.67% overall. Morning shows struggled at 6.97%, while night shows fared better at 15.05%.
Story and Cast
Directed by Vishal Furia, Maa stars Kajol in a fierce role as a mother fighting against dark supernatural forces to protect her daughter. The film brings together an ensemble cast including Indraneil Sengupta, Ronit Roy, Kherin Sharma, Jitin Gulati, and others. Produced by Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Deshpande under Devgn Films and Jio Studios, the film dives into a world of myth and mysticism with emotional undercurrents.
Tough Box Office Rivalry: Kannappa Surges Ahead
Maa’s journey hasn’t been easy, thanks to stiff competition from Vishnu Manchu’s mythological action-drama Kannappa, which also released on the same day. Boasting cameos from Akshay Kumar, Mohanlal, and Prabhas, Kannappa has attracted mass audiences and action lovers alike.
Interestingly, Maa outpaced Kannappa on Day 3 with ₹6.71 crore vs ₹5.66 crore. However, Kannappa bounced back on Day 4, matching Maa’s Monday collection at ₹2.25 crore.
So far:
Maa (4-day total): ₹19.90 crore
Kannappa (4-day total): ₹25.90 crore
With both films still running in theatres, the coming week will be crucial. Maa may continue to ride on word-of-mouth among horror enthusiasts, while Kannappa looks to maintain its lead with broader appeal and star power. Who will emerge stronger by the weekend — Kajol’s emotional horror or Vishnu Manchu’s mythological epic? The box office race is far from over.
