Muharram 2025: Ashura to Be Observed on July 6 — Date, History, and Significance of the Islamic New Year
Muharram 2025: Ashura to Be Observed on July 6 — Know Its Date, History and Spiritual Importance.
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year and holds deep religious significance for Muslims worldwide. Second in holiness only to Ramadan, Muharram is a month of mourning, remembrance, and reflection — especially its 10th day, known as Ashura.
Muharram 2025: Ashura on July 6 or 7?
In 2025, the crescent moon marking the start of Muharram was sighted in India on June 26, making June 27 the first day of Muharram. This places Ashura — the 10th day of Muharram — on Sunday, July 6. The date may vary slightly in other countries depending on moon sightings.
Given its religious significance, many states in India will observe a public holiday on Ashura, with government offices, schools, and banks expected to remain closed.
What Is Ashura and Why Is It Observed?
Ashura is a day of profound spiritual and historical importance. It commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Imam Hussain, along with his family and companions, stood against the tyrannical rule of Yazid I and refused to surrender to injustice. Denied water and heavily outnumbered, they were massacred on the plains of Karbala — a moment that became a symbol of sacrifice, faith, and resistance.
While Shia Muslims mourn Hussain’s martyrdom through mourning rituals, processions, and recitations, Sunni Muslims often observe fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, following the Prophet’s tradition of honoring the day when Moses and his followers were saved from Pharaoh.
The Deeper Significance of Muharram
Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam during which warfare is forbidden. It is a time for spiritual reflection, prayer, and recommitment to values such as justice, humility, and standing for truth — all exemplified by Imam Hussain’s legacy.
As Muslims enter the year Hijri 1447, the lessons of Ashura remain timeless — reminding the faithful of the cost of courage and the importance of moral integrity in the face of oppression.
