After BRICS Summit in Rio, PM Modi Begins State Visit to Brazil with Warm Welcome in Brasília

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brasília on Monday evening for the Brazilian leg of his visit, following the conclusion of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. He was welcomed at the airport by Brazil’s Defence Minister Jose Mucio Monteiro Filho, as local artists performed a lively Samba Reggae showcase in his honour.

Modi’s visit comes at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and aims to strengthen the Strategic Partnership between India and Brazil.

“Taking new strides in the India-Brazil steadfast partnership,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, noting the ceremonial welcome in a post on X.

Bilateral Talks on Trade, Tech, Defence and More
During his stay in Brasília, PM Modi will hold high-level talks with President Lula, focusing on cooperation in defence, space, energy, trade, agriculture, technology, health, and people-to-people exchanges, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

The discussions are expected to explore ways to expand bilateral trade and investments, and deepen collaboration in global and multilateral forums.

Reflecting on BRICS: A Productive Rio Leg
Earlier, Modi participated in the two-day BRICS Summit in Rio, where he joined leaders of Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa for extensive discussions on global issues.

“The Rio leg of my Brazil visit was very productive,” he posted on X, sharing highlights including bilateral meetings and engagements with the Indian diaspora. “I commend President Lula and the Brazilian government for leading BRICS effectively this year.”

PM Modi also addressed a session on ‘Environment, COP-30 and Global Health’, stating that under India’s 2026 chairmanship, BRICS would be redefined as:

“Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.”

India–MERCOSUR Expansion Discussed with Uruguay
On the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, PM Modi met with Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi to explore deeper trade ties between India and the MERCOSUR bloc. Discussions included digital payments (UPI), health and pharma, railways, agriculture, and cultural cooperation.

The two leaders agreed on the need to expand the Preferential Trade Agreement to unlock new economic opportunities and complementarity between both regions.

Multi-Nation Tour in Progress
PM Modi’s Brazil visit is part of a broader five-nation diplomatic tour that began in Ghana, followed by stops in Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and now Brazil. He is scheduled to visit Namibia on July 9, where he will address the country’s Parliament — a symbolic gesture of growing bilateral ties.
