Trump Imposes 50% Tariff on Brazil, Cites Bolsonaro Trial as Reason

Trump Hits Brazil With 50% Tariff, Expands Trade Offensive to 20 Countries Over “Unfair Practices” and Bolsonaro Trial.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday launched a sweeping new phase in his global trade agenda, announcing steep tariffs on eight additional countries, including a 50% duty on imports from Brazil — the harshest penalty yet.

Trump linked the Brazil move not just to trade grievances but also to the ongoing prosecution of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, calling it an act of “international disgrace.” The new tariffs will take effect on August 1, and are part of what Trump described as a broader plan to correct “unfair trade imbalances” that threaten U.S. economic and national security interests.

“This is about restoring fairness. The United States cannot keep absorbing the cost of decades-long trade abuses,” Trump wrote in a letter posted on his Truth Social platform.

Full List of Tariff Targets
The White House confirmed the following tariff rates:

  • 50% on Brazil
  • 30% on Algeria, Iraq, Libya, Sri Lanka
  • 25% on Brunei and Moldova
  • 20% on the Philippines

The announcements follow Trump’s Monday decision to impose 25% tariffs on all imports from Japan and South Korea, further escalating trade tensions in Asia.

Within 72 hours, the administration expanded the list to include 12 more countries: Myanmar, Laos, South Africa, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Tunisia, Indonesia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bangladesh, Serbia, Cambodia, and Thailand — bringing the total to 20 nations facing new trade barriers.

Tariffs as Leverage and Warning
Trump framed the actions as necessary to protect American manufacturing and fix what he called “long-standing structural imbalances” caused by foreign tariffs, subsidies, and regulations.

In a warning to targeted countries, Trump wrote:

“Any retaliatory tariffs will result in additional duties by the United States. We’re done playing nice.”

Bolsonaro Trial Fuels Brazil Action
The sharpest penalty — the 50% tariff on Brazil — was partly attributed to what Trump called a “politically motivated trial” of Bolsonaro, a close ideological ally. He argued the legal proceedings were unjust and a signal that U.S. allies were being targeted unfairly.

“A good man is being punished because of who he is — that’s not justice, that’s persecution,” Trump stated.

The 50% tariff replaces the 10% duty imposed on Brazilian imports earlier in April and will apply across all sectors, separately from any existing product-specific duties.

Brics in the Crosshairs: 10% Tariff Warning
Trump also issued a clear warning to Brics nations — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — declaring that all members of the economic bloc would soon face a 10% tariff. “Anybody in Brics is getting a 10% charge pretty soon,” he said, accusing the group of trying to undermine the U.S. dollar’s dominance.

“If we lose the world standard dollar, it’s like losing a world war. I won’t let that happen. If they want to challenge the dollar, they better be ready to pay a price.” Trump claimed the Brics alliance was designed to weaken American influence and devalue the dollar as the global reserve currency — and vowed to act accordingly.

Path for Exemptions, But Only on U.S. Terms
Trump noted that companies relocating manufacturing to the U.S. could apply for tariff exemptions, presenting it as an incentive to “bring jobs back home.”

He reiterated that the U.S. remains open to trade, but only if it is “reciprocal and fair.”
