California Teens Protest Closure of Trans Youth Clinic Amid Trump-Era Policy Shift.

Just months into President Donald Trump’s second term, the closure of the Centre for Transyouth Health and Development at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) has sparked protests among transgender youth. The clinic, a leading provider of gender-affirming care for minors, will shut down on July 22 after facing federal funding threats and political pressure.

Established in 1991, the CHLA centre offered counselling, medical support, and hormone therapy to thousands of trans youth. Its abrupt closure has left many devastated. “This place saved my life,” said Eli, a teen patient. Another, Katie, added, “Losing this now would destroy my life.”

Hospital officials cited a combination of factors, including federal policy changes, executive orders, California’s budget shortfalls, and fears of losing funding, for the decision.

The move follows a broader legal trend after the US Supreme Court recently upheld Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. Activists say such measures are part of a wider effort to roll back protections for trans youth nationwide.
