IIM-Calcutta Student Arrested for Alleged Rape; Father of Woman Denies Assault

A second-year MBA student at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has been arrested following allegations of rape made by a woman inside the boys’ hostel. However, the case has taken a dramatic twist after the woman’s father publicly denied any assault, claiming his daughter was “fine and resting.”

The woman, a professional psychological counsellor, filed a handwritten complaint at Haridevpur police station on Friday evening. She alleged she had been invited to the accused’s hostel room, offered pizza and water, and soon after felt dizzy and lost consciousness. She stated that she woke up to find she had been raped and tortured.

Based on the complaint, Kolkata Police booked the student—who is from Karnataka—under sections 64 (rape) and 123 (administering drugs or poison) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and arrested him from the campus in the early hours of July 12.

However, in a surprising turn on Saturday, the woman’s father told the media that no such incident had occurred. He said his daughter had fainted after falling from an auto-rickshaw and was later found at the neurology department of SSKM Hospital. “She is okay now. No one misbehaved with her, and she doesn’t even know the boy who’s been arrested,” he claimed.

Despite his statement, Kolkata Police maintained that the FIR was filed on the basis of a formal, handwritten complaint submitted directly by the woman. According to a police source, she had initially approached Thakurpukur police station but was directed to Haridevpur, which has jurisdiction over the IIM Calcutta campus. A female officer assisted her in filing the complaint.

The accused was produced before the Alipore court on Friday and remanded to seven days in police custody.

Police Account in Court
According to police, the incident took place on July 11 between 11:45 am and 8:35 pm. They told the court that the accused had called the complainant to his hostel room under the pretext of seeking counselling. He allegedly offered her lunch and water, after which she felt dizzy. The police alleged that he then had non-consensual sexual intercourse with her.

During the arrest, police seized the accused’s clothing and mobile phone. His statement was also recorded. As the investigation progressed, additional charges were added, including Sections 127(2) (wrongful confinement), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 76 (assault) under the BNS.

An inquiry is now underway into the father’s public denial, which contradicts the woman’s complaint. Police said the matter remains under active investigation.
