Bombay High Court Restrains Bihar Lawyer from Impersonating Sonu Nigam on X.
The Bombay High Court has granted interim relief to singer Sonu Nigam by restraining a Bihar-based lawyer from using his name to post content on X (formerly Twitter).
Nigam approached the court after a user operating under the name ‘Sonu Nigam’—identified as criminal lawyer Sonu Nigam Singh—allegedly posted politically and communally charged content that was being mistakenly attributed to the singer, triggering public backlash and confusion.
As reported by Bar and Bench, Justice R.I. Chagla on Friday passed an ex-parte interim order directing Singh to clearly disclose his full name on the platform to avoid misrepresentation.
Nigam’s counsel, advocate Hiren Kamod, told the court that Singh had amassed over 90,000 followers, including prominent public figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former minister Smriti Irani, by exploiting the singer’s identity. Kamod presented 14 examples of objectionable posts, including one directed at BJP MP Tejasvi Surya over Kannada films.
“Because of the posts made by Sonu Nigam Singh, the real Sonu Nigam is facing relentless online abuse,” Kamod said, adding that the impersonation had caused significant distress to the singer and his family since August 2024.
Importantly, Sonu Nigam quit X in 2017 and is currently active only on Instagram, where he shares updates related to his music and personal life.
