Fadnavis Jests in Council: “Join Us After 2029, Uddhav-ji”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis sparked laughter in the Legislative Council on Wednesday with a tongue-in-cheek offer to his predecessor Uddhav Thackeray — inviting him to join the ruling side. The cheeky remark came during the farewell of Ambadas Danve, Leader of Opposition and a senior leader from Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT). With Thackeray present in the House, Fadnavis turned to him and said:

“Uddhav-ji, there’s no chance of us sitting in the opposition till 2029. But if you want to join the ruling side, it can be considered — it’s up to you.” The NDA benches erupted in laughter, but Thackeray remained stone-faced. Later, when reporters asked about Fadnavis’ comment, he replied with a smile, “Let it go. Some things should be taken lightly.”

Adding to the buzz, a video of Fadnavis and Thackeray briefly shaking hands and exchanging smiles before the session surfaced online — a rare moment of cordiality between two former allies now on opposing fronts. Taking a friendly dig at Danve as well, Fadnavis added, “Ambadas Danve may sit anywhere — ruling or opposition — but his thoughts are clearly right-wing.”

Following the NDA’s emphatic win in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Fadnavis appears secure in power, with no signs of returning to the opposition until at least 2029.
