Macau Open 2025: Satwik-Chirag Cruise into Second Round, Treesa-Gayatri Suffer Early Exit.
India’s campaign at the Macau Open Super 300 got off to a mixed start on Tuesday, with a commanding win by top men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, and a surprise first-round exit for women’s top seeds Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand.
Satwik-Chirag Back in Form
Fresh off reclaiming their spot in the BWF top 10 rankings, Satwik and Chirag—also reigning Asian Games champions—opened their tournament with a dominant 21-13, 21-15 victory over Malaysia’s Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong. The 36-minute match saw the Indian duo control the pace from the outset, racing to a 6-1 lead in the first game and never looking back.
While the Malaysian pair briefly narrowed the gap in both games, Satwik and Chirag responded with powerful net play and sharp smashes to seal a convincing win and move into the second round.
Top Seeds Treesa-Gayatri Knocked Out
In stark contrast, women’s doubles top seeds Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand crashed out in a three-game upset to Chinese Taipei’s Lin Xiao Min and Peng Yu Wei. Despite winning the opening game 21-16, the Indian duo lost momentum in the second and struggled to recover, eventually falling 21-16, 20-22, 15-21 in a tightly contested 60-minute encounter.
The early exit is a setback for India in the women’s doubles draw, where Treesa and Gayatri were expected to make a deep run.
Indian Qualifiers Shine
In the women’s singles qualifiers, youngsters Anmol Kharb and Tasnim Mir advanced to the main draw. Anmol eased past Azerbaijan’s Keisha Fatimah Azzahra 21-11, 21-13, while Tasnim edged out Thailand’s Tidapron Kleebyeesun in a hard-fought 21-14, 13-21, 21-17 victory.
Challenging matchups await in the main draw: Tasnim is set to face Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei, while Anmol will take on Thailand’s second seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan.
Other Indian Results
In men’s doubles, the pair of Dingku Singh Konthoujam and Amaan Mohammad defeated Hong Kong’s Law Cheuk Him and Yeung Shing Choi 21-18, 21-17 to book a place in the main draw. They will now face fellow Indians Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy and Sai Pratheek K in an all-Indian clash.
In mixed doubles, Thandrangini Hema Nagendra Babu and Priya Konjengbam advanced to the main draw and are set to meet Thailand’s Phuwanat Horbanluekit and Fungfa Korpthammakit in their opener.
However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing—Meiraba Luwang Maisnam exited the men’s singles qualifiers after a 15-21, 21-17, 13-21 loss to China’s Zhu Xuan Chen in the second round.
While Satwik and Chirag’s confident start has boosted India’s hopes in men’s doubles, the unexpected departure of Treesa and Gayatri has dealt an early blow to the women’s campaign. With several youngsters entering the main draw, all eyes will now be on how India’s next generation fares against world-class opposition.
