Henry’s 6-39 Demolishes Zimbabwe as New Zealand Dominate Day 1.
Matt Henry tore through Zimbabwe’s batting lineup with a stunning six-wicket haul as New Zealand seized control on the opening day of the first Test in Bulawayo on Wednesday.
Opting to bat first, Zimbabwe folded for just 149 in under two sessions — their second-lowest total in Tests this year — as Henry ran riot with figures of 6 for 39. He dismissed both openers, Brian Bennett and Ben Curran, early, then returned to claim key middle-order scalps with relentless precision and movement off the pitch.
Nathan Smith provided solid support, taking 3 for 33, including the prized wickets of captain Craig Ervine and Sean Williams. Smith was slightly fortunate with an lbw decision against Ervine, as replays hinted the ball might have missed leg stump.
Zimbabwe never recovered from the early blows. Though Ervine and Tsiga were handed lives, New Zealand’s pressure remained unrelenting. Sikandar Raza, back in the Test side, fell cheaply fending at a Henry bouncer, gifting a simple catch behind.
Stand-in skipper Mitchell Santner capped off a sharp fielding display with a diving catch as the hosts crumbled without resistance. In reply, New Zealand’s top order made a confident start. Devon Conway reached 51* and Will Young remained on 41*, guiding the visitors to 92 without loss by stumps — just 57 runs behind and firmly in control.
Having won 11 of their 17 previous Tests against Zimbabwe, New Zealand are now well-positioned to build a commanding lead in the two-match series.
