Malegaon Blast Case Verdict Today: 17 Years, 6 Lives Lost, and a Trial That Shook India.
A special NIA court in Mumbai will deliver its verdict today in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, nearly 17 years after a deadly explosion killed six people and injured over 100 in the communally sensitive town of Malegaon, Maharashtra.
Among the key accused are BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit — both central figures in what became the first terror case involving alleged Hindu extremists.
The Blast That Changed the Narrative
On September 29, 2008, during the holy month of Ramadan, a bomb strapped to a motorcycle exploded near Bhikku Chowk in Malegaon’s Muslim-majority area. Six people died and 101 were injured.
The Maharashtra ATS, which took over the investigation, traced the motorcycle to Pragya Thakur. She and 10 others were arrested, including Col Purohit. The ATS alleged that the blast was part of a larger plan by a radical outfit, Abhinav Bharat, to retaliate against Islamist terror attacks.
What the Investigations Found
The bike used in the blast had a fake number plate and its engine/chassis numbers had been tampered with.
Forensic tests revealed the motorcycle belonged to Thakur, though it was allegedly being used by absconding accused Ramchandra Kalsangra.
Confessional statements formed the bulk of early evidence, later questioned for legality under MCOCA.
In 2009, ATS filed its chargesheet, claiming the accused acted out of ideological vengeance. In 2011, the case was transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The NIA Twist
In 2016, the NIA filed a supplementary chargesheet:
Dropped MCOCA charges due to procedural lapses.
Sought to drop charges against Thakur, citing lack of prosecutable evidence.
Argued that Abhinav Bharat existed but the link to the Malegaon blast was weaker than ATS claimed.
However, the special court refused to discharge Thakur and ruled that seven of the original 11 accused would stand trial under UAPA, IPC, and the Explosive Substances Act.
The Long Road to Verdict
Accused on trial: Pragya Thakur, Col Purohit, Ramesh Upadhyay, Sameer Kulkarni, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, Ajay Rahirkar, and Sudhakar Dwivedi.
Discharged: Shivnarayan Kalsangra, Shyamlal Sahu, and Pravin Takalki due to lack of evidence.
Trial began: 2018

What’s at Stake
The charges include:
UAPA: Sections 16 (terrorist act), 18 (conspiracy)
IPC: Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 120B (criminal conspiracy)
Explosives Act & Arms Act
The NIA has alleged the blast was meant to instil fear among Muslims, destabilize social harmony, and create communal unrest.
Awaiting Justice
Today’s verdict will not just decide the fate of seven accused — it will bring closure to a case that deeply influenced the national discourse on terror, religious extremism, and the politicisation of investigations.
