Supreme Court Dismisses Justice Varma’s Plea Against Ouster Recommendation.

The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected Justice Yashwant Varma’s petition challenging the in-house inquiry report that recommended his removal after a significant stash of unaccounted cash was found at his residence earlier this year. The ruling paves the way for Parliament to initiate impeachment proceedings against Justice Varma, who had also contested the former Chief Justice of India’s recommendation to the President seeking his dismissal.

A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and A.G. Masih upheld the legality of both the inquiry process and the committee’s formation. “The CJI and the in-house committee followed proper procedure, except for uploading photos and videos — which was not mandatory,” the court noted. “Besides, you didn’t object to it at the time.”

The bench also clarified that the CJI’s communication to the Prime Minister and President was constitutional. “We’ve made observations, keeping certain questions open should you choose to raise them in future proceedings,” the court added.
