Rajasthan Becomes First State to Enforce SC Order on Stray Dogs

Rajasthan has become the first state to implement the Supreme Court’s directives on stray dog management, directing all municipal bodies to submit compliance reports within 30 days. The order mandates sterilisation, rabies vaccination, and deworming centres in every city, with dogs to be treated, tagged, and released in their original localities. CCTV cameras will be installed in ABC centres, and only trained teams will be allowed to catch dogs.

Monitoring committees with NGOs and animal welfare workers will oversee the process. The Animal Welfare Board of India has fixed costs at ₹200 per dog for catching and ₹1,450 for sterilisation and post-operative care. The move comes after the Supreme Court stressed that strays must be managed under the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, rather than being indiscriminately rounded up or confined.
