Neeraj Chopra aims for consistency beyond 90m, names Julian Weber as key rival ahead of Diamond League final

Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra appeared calm and focused as he addressed the media ahead of the Diamond League Final in Zurich, Switzerland, alongside double Olympic discus champion Valarie Allman. He spoke about his goals after crossing the 90m mark, lessons under coach Jan Zelezny, and the competitors he expects to challenge him most.

Chopra, the reigning world champion, achieved a throw of 90.23m in Doha earlier this year, surpassing his previous personal best of 89.94m. Despite the milestone, he finished second to Germany’s Julian Weber, who threw 91.06m.

“I was waiting so long for 90m. I’m happy people are no longer asking about it. Now, it’s over,” Neeraj said, reflecting on the achievement.

Technique and Training

Neeraj highlighted the importance of technique under his new coach, three-time Olympic champion Jan Zelezny, focusing on tweaks such as optimizing his left-leg position at release and perfecting his block to maximize speed. “In Doha, the throw was good, but my technique wasn’t perfect. With a straighter left leg and proper block, I can throw even further,” he explained.

He also acknowledged that weather conditions in Zurich, including rain, could pose challenges but emphasized staying mentally focused.

Handling Pressure

Chopra praised Zelezny for teaching him consistency and how to handle pressure during major competitions. “Jan always says, ‘technique is my biggest weapon.’ I’m learning from him and trying to apply it consistently,” Neeraj said.

Rivals and Competition

When asked about his toughest competitor, Chopra named Julian Weber, citing their close contests in Doha and Brussels. “He’s doing really well, and I enjoy competing with him,” Neeraj added. Chopra will face a strong seven-man field, including Weber, former world champion Anderson Peters, and Olympic medallists Julius Yego and Keshorn Walcott. Arshad Nadeem will not feature in the Diamond League this week.

Having skipped earlier meets in Silesia and Brussels to conserve energy, Chopra enters the Zurich finale refreshed and focused, aiming to maintain consistency beyond 90m as he prepares for the World Championships in Tokyo next month.
