Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced a “new and golden chapter” in India-Japan ties, unveiling a 10-year roadmap for strategic cooperation across technology, defence, and other key sectors.
At a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Modi highlighted the complementary strengths of Japanese technology and Indian talent, stressing the importance of collaboration amid global geopolitical challenges.
“Strong democracies are natural partners in shaping a better world. Our shared vision spans investment, innovation, economic security, environment, technology, health, mobility, people-to-people exchanges, and state-prefecture partnerships,” Modi said.
The announcement comes as India aims to strengthen ties with traditional partners like Japan, even as relations with the US face tensions following a 50% tariff on Indian imports.
The two nations signed 13 MoUs and agreements, targeting 10 trillion yen in investments in India over the next decade. Key focus areas include semiconductors, rare earth minerals, and high-tech collaboration through initiatives such as Digital Partnership 2.0 and the AI Cooperation Initiative.
Other major initiatives unveiled include the Sustainable Fuels Initiative, Battery Supply Chain Partnership, and the Economic Security Cooperation Initiative. Modi also announced India-Japan collaboration on the Chandrayaan-5 lunar mission, along with enhanced cooperation in defence and innovation.
