Taylor Swift’s Ring Rekindles Debate Over Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds

“I like shiny things, but I’d marry you with paper rings,” Taylor Swift once sang. But the ring she received from Travis Kelce is no paper trinket—it’s a supersized old mine brilliant-cut diamond, estimated to be worth over ₹4 crore.

Swift’s publicist confirmed the antique cut, while jewellers describe it as “the Holy Grail” of stones, prized for its rarity and softer hand-cut sparkle. Fans are delighted that Kelce co-designed the ring with an independent jeweller, and whispers of an Indian link have only amplified excitement.

Natural vs. Lab-Grown

The timing of Swift’s choice is striking. Over half of US engagement rings now feature lab-grown diamonds, which are 80% cheaper and marketed as ethical and sustainable. Global natural diamond prices have slumped nearly 30% in three years, with De Beers even shuttering its lab-grown brand, Lightbox, earlier in 2025.

By choosing an antique natural stone, Swift has unintentionally given the traditional diamond market a global push. Analysts say her ring reframes value away from flawless machine-cut stones toward provenance, individuality, and romance—qualities labs can’t replicate.

The Swift Effect on Markets

The impact was immediate. Shares of Signet Jewelers and Brilliant Earth spiked after the engagement news, with business influencers calling Swift’s ring “the world’s biggest free marketing campaign” for natural diamonds.

This fits a broader pattern. Swift’s cultural sway is so strong it has measurable economic impact—from boosting GDPs of cities hosting her Eras Tour to inspiring academic courses on her influence.

Industry Reactions

Still, jewellers are divided. “One celebrity ring won’t reverse the larger consumer shift,” says Disha Shah of DiAi Designs. Anand Lukhi of Lukson Jewels points out that younger buyers care about sustainability and price, though lab-grown stones’ heavy energy footprint complicates their green claims.

Natural-diamond advocates, however, see Swift’s choice as a reminder of enduring emotional value. “A natural diamond carries permanence and meaning—qualities fans may rediscover when someone like Taylor Swift embraces them,” says Adeesh Nahar of Rosa Amoris.
