China’s YJ-21 Hypersonic Missile: The Mach 6 ‘Warship Killer’

China unveiled the YJ-21 missile at its Victory Day (V-Day) military parade, highlighting its hypersonic strike capability. Known as a “warship killer,” the missile travels at six times the speed of sound, making it extremely difficult for enemy air defence systems to intercept.

Air and Sea Launch Capability

The YJ-21 follows a ballistic trajectory that allows it to briefly leave the atmosphere before re-entering at speeds of Mach 6–7. This design extends its range and terminal velocity, enabling it to target high-value assets like aircraft carriers. The missile can be launched from Chinese warships and H-6K and H-6N bombers, giving China a flexible strike capability across the Indo-Pacific.

From DF-21D to Hypersonic Power

Experts believe the YJ-21 is an upgraded version of the DF-21D “carrier killer”, operational since 2010. By adding hypersonic technology, China has enhanced its A2/AD (Anti-Access/Area Denial) strategy, aiming to keep US and allied naval forces away from its coastline.

Estimated Specifications

  • Speed: Mach 6–10
  • Range: 1,200–1,500 km
  • Warhead: High-explosive; nuclear potential unclear
  • Guidance: Inertial Navigation + Active Radar or Infrared seeker
  • Platforms: Type 055 destroyer, Type 054B frigate, H-6N bomber
  • Launch System: Universal HT-1E Vertical Launch System

Strategic Implications

For India, the YJ-21 threatens aircraft carriers and large naval vessels, while India’s BrahMos-II hypersonic missile is still in development. For the US, the missile challenges carrier strike groups and may evade interceptors like the SM-6, posing a serious threat to naval dominance in the Indo-Pacific.

The YJ-21 is part of China’s broader military ecosystem, including advanced submarines, surface warships, fighter jets, and satellite networks, all aimed at strengthening its maritime control and regional influence.
