CPRI Unveils Kufri Chipsona-5, Promises Higher Income for Potato Farmers in Western UP.

The Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI) in Modipuram has introduced 76 new potato varieties, including the high-yielding Kufri Chipsona-5, aimed at boosting farmers’ income in western Uttar Pradesh. Researchers claim that some of these varieties exhibit innovative growth techniques, including the ability to grow in air, reflecting the institute’s advanced approach to potato cultivation.

Traditionally a sugarcane-growing region, western Uttar Pradesh is gradually embracing potato farming. Experts at CPRI suggest that combining potato cultivation with sugarcane could substantially enhance farmers’ earnings, given the strong demand for quality potato seeds and produce.

Kufri Chipsona-5 Designed for Chip Production
Kufri Chipsona-5, developed after years of research, is ideal for chip processing. Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Director of CPRI, said the variety matures in 90–100 days and yields 300–350 quintals per hectare. “The tubers are white and cream-colored, contain 21% dry matter, and only 100mg sugar per 100g, making them perfect for consumption and processing,” he explained.

This variety is suitable for cultivation across several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Uttarakhand. Experts believe it will improve the quality of potatoes in the market while significantly increasing farmers’ income.

Emphasis on Storage and Longevity
Dr. Kumar highlighted that CPRI’s varieties are developed with long shelf life and storage stability in mind, addressing a key challenge in the potato supply chain. “So far, 76 varieties have been developed, each tailored to meet diverse agricultural and consumer needs,” he added.
