BSE, NSE Closed Today for Diwali Balipratipada; Trading Resumes Tomorrow.

The stock market remains closed on Wednesday, October 22, as BSE and NSE observe Diwali Balipratipada. Regular trading will resume on Thursday, October 23. This follows Tuesday’s Diwali holiday, leaving only two more market holidays this year: Guru Nanak Jayanti (November 5) and Christmas (December 25).

Muhurat Trading Session

The special Muhurat trading session on Tuesday marked the beginning of Samvat 2082. Held between 1:45 pm and 2:45 pm, the one-hour session opened strongly, with the Sensex surging over 270 points and the Nifty briefly crossing 25,900, led by blue-chip stocks such as Infosys, HDFC Bank, and Mahindra & Mahindra. Profit-taking trimmed early gains, leaving indices slightly higher by the close. Despite light volumes, traders participated actively to mark the start of the new financial year on a positive note.

Why Diwali Balipratipada Is Celebrated

Also known as Govardhan Puja or Padwa, Diwali Balipratipada is dedicated to King Bali, symbolizing generosity, humility, and renewal. For investors, the day is considered auspicious for fresh financial beginnings, aligning spiritual and monetary growth.

Market Outlook for Samvat 2082

Experts are optimistic about the new financial year. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said, “Samvat 2081 was largely a consolidation year, but hopes are high for stronger earnings growth in Samvat 2082.”

Motilal Oswal Financial Services highlighted policy support and improved liquidity as key drivers. “Repo and CRR cuts, along with income tax relief, are boosting demand and supporting corporate earnings,” the firm said. Controlled inflation, the rollout of GST 2.0, and renewed consumer sentiment are also expected to fuel domestic growth.

The brokerage expects sectors like banking and financial services, capital markets, consumption, manufacturing, and digital businesses to perform well. Nifty earnings are projected to grow 8% in FY26 and 16% in FY27, signaling a positive start to Samvat 2082. Investors are advised to adopt a selective approach, especially for mid- and small-cap stocks trading at a slight premium.
