CBI Takes Over Probe Into Karur Stampede That Killed 41.

The CBI has taken over the investigation into the Karur stampede, which claimed 41 lives and left over 60 injured during a political rally of actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on September 27 at Velusamypuram, Tamil Nadu.

A special CBI team has already visited the site and re-registered the FIR filed by the state police, while the local court has been notified of the development.

The Supreme Court directed the CBI to take charge after TVK petitioned for an independent probe. The court instructed the CBI director to appoint a senior officer to lead the investigation, supported by other officers, and established a three-member supervisory committee led by former judge Ajay Rastogi to monitor the investigation.

A bench of Justices J K Maheshwari and N V Anjaria noted the wide impact of the stampede and emphasized the importance of restoring public trust in the investigation. The court expressed concern over political remarks made by top police officials, which could raise doubts about impartiality.

“The faith and trust of the general public in the criminal justice system must be restored. The investigation must be impartial, independent, and unbiased,” the bench said. “Given the gravity of the incident, which has shaken the national conscience, a fair investigation is the right of every citizen.”
