“Stress by itself doesn’t directly cause a brain aneurysm,” explains Dr. Sumeet Pawar, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai. “However, it can definitely worsen the conditions that make aneurysms dangerous. Chronic stress leads to elevated levels of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which can increase blood pressure and inflammation in blood vessels. Over time, this can strain arterial walls and raise the risk of rupture if an aneurysm already exists.”
In simple terms, stress may not create an aneurysm, but it can push an existing one toward rupture — turning a silent risk into a medical emergency.
How Common Are Brain Aneurysms?
“Approximately one in 50 people have a brain aneurysm,” says Dr. Sunil V. Furtado, Head of Neurosurgery at Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Bengaluru. “Most of these individuals never experience symptoms and may live their entire lives without knowing they have one.”
He adds that while emotional stress can temporarily raise blood pressure, research hasn’t proven a direct cause-and-effect relationship. “Stress may contribute indirectly by worsening hypertension or inflammation, but aneurysm formation is more commonly linked to genetics, smoking, or vascular disease,” Dr. Furtado notes.
What Exactly Is a Brain Aneurysm?
A brain aneurysm occurs when a weak section of a blood vessel wall bulges out, forming a balloon-like swelling. If the aneurysm ruptures, it causes bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke), which can be life-threatening. Symptoms of a rupture include an intense, sudden headache — often described as “the worst headache of your life” — nausea, blurred vision, or loss of consciousness.
How To Reduce the Risk
Doctors recommend managing risk factors that strain blood vessels — especially high blood pressure, smoking, poor sleep, and chronic stress. Practices like meditation, yoga, deep breathing, and regular physical activity can significantly help in lowering stress and maintaining vascular health.
It’s also crucial to seek regular medical check-ups, especially for those with a family history of aneurysms or persistent hypertension.
