India Celebrates 150 Years of ‘Vande Mataram’; Leaders Honour Its Legacy

Today marks 150 years of Vande Mataram, the iconic national song that has inspired generations and played a pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a year-long celebration in Delhi, releasing a commemorative stamp and coin to mark the milestone.

“7th November is a momentous day for every Indian. Vande Mataram has ignited the spirit of patriotism across generations,” Modi said in a social media post.

President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the song’s historical roots, noting that Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay composed it during the Sannyasi Rebellion against British rule. “Since the 1905 Swadeshi Movement, it has remained a source of inspiration and a symbol of unity,” she said, urging citizens to preserve its spirit for future generations.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah described Vande Mataram as “the voice of India’s soul,” recalling how it united the nation during the struggle for independence. He encouraged families to sing the full version of the song to keep its patriotic spirit alive.

BJP President JP Nadda said the song became “a triumphant chant of freedom” for countless revolutionaries. He called on citizens to join nationwide singing events from November 7 to 26, coinciding with Constitution Day, to honour the song as a “divine proclamation of Mother India.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath added, “Vande Mataram instilled the sentiment of ‘Nation First,’ reminding us of our dedication to Bharat Mata.” Composed in 1875, Vande Mataram continues to evoke unity, pride, and patriotism across India, making its 150th anniversary a historic moment of reflection and celebration.
