Kremlin Hopes Another Putin-Trump Summit Can Happen Soon.
The Kremlin said on Monday it hopes a new summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump could take place once preparations are complete. The two leaders last met in August in Alaska, discussing a potential path to end the war in Ukraine. A planned Budapest summit announced last month was canceled by Trump, who said the timing “did not feel right.”
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters the timing of a future meeting is uncertain but emphasized both sides agree the summit must be carefully prepared. “As soon as this preparation is completed and the conditions for holding the summit are in place, we hope it will take place,” he said.
Trump previously expressed frustration with Putin, stating, “Every time I speak with Vladimir, I have good conversations, and then they don’t go anywhere.” On October 22, he imposed Ukraine-related sanctions on Russia, targeting oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil.
On Sunday, Trump said US Republicans are working on legislation to sanction any country doing business with Russia. Peskov warned Moscow would take a “very negative view” of such a bill. Meanwhile, Trump has also raised tariffs on Indian goods, citing India’s purchases of Russian oil—a move Moscow described as illegal trade pressure.
