CBI to Challenge Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s Bail in Supreme Court.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday announced that it will challenge the Delhi High Court’s order granting bail to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case. The agency said it will approach the Supreme Court at the earliest by filing a Special Leave Petition (SLP) seeking to set aside the relief granted to the convict.

A CBI spokesperson said, “CBI has studied the orders of the Division Bench of the Delhi High Court and has decided to file an SLP before the Hon’ble Supreme Court at the earliest against the orders granting bail to Sengar by suspension of the sentence.”

The agency added that it had strongly opposed both Sengar’s appeal and his bail petition before the Delhi High Court, filing detailed replies and written submissions. A senior CBI official said, “It is we who investigated and got the conviction after trial… There is no question about going soft on it.”

Rahul Gandhi Meets Survivor and Family

Earlier on Wednesday, the rape survivor, her mother, and activist Yogita Bhayana met Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi at 10, Janpath in New Delhi. Rahul Gandhi assured the family of all possible support in their fight for justice and safety.

During the meeting, the survivor and her family placed three requests before him regarding their legal battle, personal security, and livelihood. The survivor later said that both Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi were visibly emotional and assured help in securing justice.

The survivor also expressed her desire to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Survivor’s Mother Manhandled During Protest

Earlier, security personnel reportedly stopped the victim and her mother from holding a protest against the Delhi High Court’s decision. The elderly woman was allegedly forced to jump off a moving bus while the survivor remained inside. The incident occurred despite the bus being escorted by CRPF personnel, none of whom were women.

Survivor Slams Delhi High Court Order

The survivor criticized the Delhi High Court order, calling it “the first of its kind in the nation”. She said:
“All the daughters of the country are now afraid that they will be raped, and the criminals will get away with it… They have confined us to our homes by giving him the order to stay 5km away from us… I have faith in the Supreme Court that it will give us justice.”

What the Delhi High Court Ordered

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court suspended Sengar’s life imprisonment in the rape case, noting that he has already served seven years and five months in prison. The sentence is suspended until the pendency of his appeal against the conviction and sentence.

Sengar will, however, remain in jail as he is also serving a 10-year sentence in the custodial death case of the victim’s father and has not been granted bail in that matter.

The bench of Justice Subramonium Prasad and Justice Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar imposed several conditions, including furnishing a personal bond of Rs 15 lakh with three sureties of the same amount.
