Papaya in Winter: Can You Eat It? Expert Advice

Papaya is a nutritious fruit known for aiding digestion, boosting immunity, and supporting weight management. But in winter, when warm foods are preferred, is it safe to eat?

Dr Anamika Gaur, former dietitian at Delhi’s GTB Hospital, says that while papaya has a cooling effect, it can be consumed in all seasons. Its digestive enzyme, papain, helps relieve constipation, acidity, and indigestion—common issues during colder months.

Why Papaya Is Good for Winter

Supports gut health: Cleanses the intestines, especially when physical activity drops.

Boosts immunity: Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, helping fend off colds and flu.

Aids weight management: Low in calories, high in fibre, and keeps you full longer.

How to Eat: Enjoy 5–6 pieces (up to 200g) in the morning on an empty stomach. Avoid eating it straight from the fridge. For mild colds or coughs, drink lukewarm water first; in severe cases, skip papaya altogether.
