X Admits Mistake, Deletes 600+ Accounts After Grok Obscenity Row.

Social media platform X has admitted its mistake and assured the Indian government that it will comply with local laws, government sources said.

As part of its corrective action, X blocked around 3,500 pieces of content and removed over 600 accounts after concerns were raised over the circulation of obscene imagery, particularly generated via Grok AI. The company has promised to prevent such content in the future and strengthen its content moderation processes to align with Indian regulations.

Government Directives

The action follows warnings from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) regarding the misuse of Grok AI to produce indecent, sexually explicit content and target women online. On January 2, the ministry instructed X to remove all vulgar, obscene, and unlawful content immediately, cautioning that non-compliance could lead to legal action under the IT Act and other applicable laws.

  • X was also asked to submit a detailed Action Taken Report within 72 hours, including:
  • Steps taken to monitor and remove objectionable content,
  • Supervision by the Chief Compliance Officer,
  • Actions against offending users and accounts,
  • Systems to ensure compliance with India’s reporting requirements.

The ministry noted that Grok AI had been misused to create fake profiles, edit images, and generate synthetic content to harass or manipulate women’s visuals.

On January 8, X submitted a detailed response to the IT Ministry, which the government described as “detailed but not adequate,” prompting continued oversight of the platform’s moderation and compliance measures.
