27 Indians Rescued From Myanmar After Being Lured Into Forced Work

After weeks of uncertainty, 27 Indians trafficked to Myanmar on false job promises have safely returned home, officials confirmed on Saturday. The group, mostly from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, were rescued following diplomatic intervention by the Ministry of External Affairs.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu had written to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, detailing how the victims were recruited by agents promising overseas employment, primarily in Thailand, before being moved across the Myanmar border. Upon arrival, their passports were seized, and they were coerced into working in cyber scam operations under threats and intimidation.

Officials said the operation required careful coordination due to security challenges in parts of Myanmar. Through collaboration between Indian missions, local authorities, and partner agencies, the stranded citizens were safely evacuated to India.

Families had reported several of the victims missing after losing contact and fearing reprisals. With their return, authorities will focus on rehabilitation and investigating cross-border trafficking networks, while issuing advisories cautioning job seekers against unverified overseas employment offers.
