Scotland Step In as Bangladesh’s Replacement for T20 World Cup 2026, Travel to India Immediately

Scotland have officially been confirmed as Bangladesh’s replacement for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and will travel to India immediately. Cricket Scotland said the squad is already preparing to acclimatise ahead of the tournament, which begins on February 7.

The ICC extended the invitation following Bangladesh’s withdrawal over security concerns. Despite assurances from the board, Bangladesh chose to maintain their stance, prompting Scotland to step in. Cricket Scotland accepted the opportunity in a letter of gratitude to the ICC.

“Earlier today, I received correspondence from the ICC asking if our men’s team would play at the T20 World Cup, and we have accepted,” said Cricket Scotland chief executive Trudy Lindblade. “This is an exciting chance for our players to compete on the global stage, and we are grateful to the ICC for extending the invite. Our squad is now preparing to travel and acclimatise ahead of the tournament.”

How Scotland Got the Spot

Scotland were named as the replacement after an ICC meeting in Dubai on Friday, chaired by Jay Shah. Bangladesh had requested the matter be referred to the dispute resolution committee, but the panel ruled it could not act as an appeal forum. With Bangladesh unwilling to reconsider, the ICC confirmed Scotland.

Scotland, ranked next in line, have previously competed in five T20 World Cups, including 2022 and 2024, and have shown they can challenge top teams. They are placed in Group C alongside England, the West Indies, Italy, and Nepal. Their campaign opens against the West Indies on February 7 in Kolkata, followed by matches against Italy (Feb 9), England (Feb 14) at Eden Gardens, and Nepal (Feb 17) in Mumbai.

Cricket Scotland is expected to announce its 15-member squad soon.
