How Alcohol Can Affect Men’s Performance in Bed
Many men reach for a drink to feel more confident, especially on dates or special evenings. While alcohol can ease nerves, it doesn’t always help in the bedroom — in fact, it can make things harder. The slang term “whiskey dick” refers to alcohol-induced difficulty in getting or maintaining an erection.
Dr P Vamsi Krishna, urology expert at CARE Hospitals, Hyderabad, explains:
“Alcohol is a depressant. It slows nerve signals and affects blood flow, both of which are essential for an erection. Even moderate drinking can cause problems, especially if you’re tired, stressed, or dehydrated. Heavier drinking increases the risk. Most men experience this at least once in their lives.”
Alcohol also temporarily lowers testosterone and dulls the brain’s response to sexual stimulation. Simply put: you may feel desire, but your body might not respond. This disconnect can be frustrating or embarrassing, especially in intimate settings.
Dr Krishna adds: “Sometimes, men start worrying it will happen again, and that anxiety can affect the next encounter. Partners may misread it as lack of interest. If it happens often and isn’t addressed, it can impact confidence and communication.”
Occasional alcohol-related issues aren’t a medical condition. They usually improve by:
- Drinking less alcohol
- Staying hydrated
- Eating well and getting enough rest
As a rule of thumb, more than two standard drinks at a time increases the risk. Heavy regular drinking can harm blood vessels, nerves, and hormone levels, leading to longer-term erectile problems. Spacing drinks, having alcohol-free days, and moderating intake can help men maintain sexual performance and confidence.
