T20 World Cup 2026: Australia bow out, Zimbabwe advance to Super 8 after Pallekele washout

Former champions Australia suffered a stunning early exit from the T20 World Cup after Zimbabwe’s group clash against Ireland was washed out at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on February 17. The abandoned match handed Zimbabwe a point, confirming their progression to the Super 8 stage alongside Sri Lanka, while Australia, Ireland, and Oman were eliminated.

This marks Australia’s first failure to reach the Super 8 stage in 17 years. The 2021 champions, having lost two of their first three group matches, were dependent on other results. Zimbabwe’s washout point mathematically ended Australia’s campaign, leaving their final match against Oman inconsequential.

Australia’s campaign unravelled

Australia’s hopes had already taken a hit after an eight-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka on Monday and a shocking loss to Zimbabwe last week, which ultimately sealed their fate.

Zimbabwe’s remarkable comeback

Sikandar Raza’s side, who missed the T20 World Cup 2024, now have a chance to top Group B when they face co-hosts Sri Lanka on February 19 at R. Premadasa Stadium. The team celebrated a return to the Super 8 stage after years of disappointment.

Rain disrupts crucial clash

Persistent rain at Pallekele delayed the toss and forced officials to cover the pitch throughout the day. A brief lull in showers offered hope, but the drizzle returned, making play impossible. After lengthy discussions with the curators and team captains, umpires officially called off the match around 5:30 PM local time, confirming a washout.

The washout not only sealed Zimbabwe’s Super 8 berth but also ended Australia’s hopes of a comeback, bringing a dramatic conclusion to the group-stage drama.
