Flyers get relief as govt orders 60% airline seats to be free of charge

Air travellers in India may soon see relief from hidden airline charges, as the government moves to regulate seat selection fees and strengthen passenger rights.

60% SEATS TO BE FREE FOR SELECTION
In a key step, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed airlines to ensure that at least 60% of seats on every flight are available for free selection.

The directive, issued through the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), is aimed at improving transparency and reducing extra costs often imposed during booking or web check-in.

PASSENGERS ON SAME BOOKING TO SIT TOGETHER
Airlines have also been asked to seat passengers on the same PNR together, preferably in adjacent seats—bringing relief to families and groups who previously had to pay extra for this.

CLEAR RULES FOR BAGGAGE, PETS AND SERVICES
The DGCA will roll out further guidelines to streamline passenger services. Airlines must adopt clear and transparent policies for carrying sports equipment and musical instruments, while ensuring safety compliance.

They are also required to clearly outline rules for travelling with pets to avoid confusion among passengers.

STRICTER FOCUS ON PASSENGER RIGHTS
The government has reinforced strict adherence to passenger rights, especially in cases of delays, cancellations and denied boarding.

Airlines must prominently display these rights across their websites, mobile apps, booking platforms and airport counters, and provide information in regional languages for wider reach.

PUSH FOR TRANSPARENCY IN A GROWING MARKET
With India now among the world’s largest domestic aviation markets, the ministry has stressed that passenger convenience remains a top priority.

The directive is part of a broader push to standardise airline practices and reduce the burden of additional charges on flyers.
