RJ Balaji has dismissed ongoing rumours about Karuppu, clarifying that the film was never written for Vijay and was always developed independently before Suriya came on board.
Speculation had suggested that the script was initially intended for Vijay and later altered for Suriya. However, Balaji explained that he began writing the film in 2023, and like most creative processes, the story evolved gradually without being tailored to any specific actor in the early stages.
He admitted that as the idea expanded, he felt the need for a major star and briefly considered Vijay, especially since the actor had previously shown interest in collaborating with him. Balaji had earlier narrated a different script to Vijay, which was appreciated, but the project did not move forward due to practical constraints and timing.
The filmmaker said that when he later narrated Karuppu to Suriya, the actor immediately responded positively and agreed to take up the project. Following this, Balaji made slight refinements to the script to align with Suriya’s strengths and screen image.
Balaji also described Karuppu as a significant leap in scale compared to his earlier films like LKG and Mookuthi Amman, with a stronger focus on action, larger storytelling and a wider audience reach, while still retaining his signature style of accessible and engaging narratives.
The film also stars Trisha Krishnan, Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada, Supreeth Reddy and Yogi Babu in key roles, making it one of Balaji’s most ambitious ventures to date.
