European Union Ready to Activate Ukraine Loan Pending Approval: Andrius Kubilius

The European Union is ready to deliver its €90 billion ($106 billion) loan to Ukraine as soon as Hungary lifts its veto, EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius said on Wednesday.

Kubilius signalled that political change in Hungary could unlock the long-delayed funding, following the opposition’s decisive election win led by Peter Magyar. “The people have spoken. A new wind is blowing,” Kubilius said, adding, “We are ready to implement the loan as soon as we get the green light.”

The expected exit of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán — one of Kyiv’s strongest critics within the EU — could remove a key obstacle to the package, which was agreed in principle by member states in December. The funds are seen as critical for Ukraine as it continues to finance its war effort against Russia.
