A first officer with Air India died in Bali on Wednesday after suffering a heart attack during a scheduled layover, the airline confirmed.

The pilot, believed to be around 40 years old, had operated a flight from Delhi to Bali a day earlier and was resting at a hotel as part of the mandated crew downtime. According to an airline spokesperson, he complained of severe discomfort at the hotel and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors diagnosed a heart attack, but he could not be revived despite emergency treatment.

“He was immediately taken to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with having suffered a heart attack. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he could not be saved,” the spokesperson said, as quoted by Press Trust of India.

The airline said it was “deeply saddened” by the loss and extended its condolences to the pilot’s family.

An official added that the pilot had undergone all mandatory medical checks in recent months and had no known pre-existing conditions. He was also operating within the flying-hour limits prescribed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
