Jamie Overton has scripted one of the most striking turnarounds of the Indian Premier League 2026 season.
Not long ago in Bengaluru, Tim David had dismantled him for 30 runs in an over at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium — a night where every plan backfired and Overton looked short on answers.
Weeks later, the same bowler stood tall under pressure.
At the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Overton played a decisive role in Chennai Super Kings’s emphatic win over Mumbai Indians. Tasked with closing out the innings, he delivered a clinical spell at the death, keeping big hitters like Hardik Pandya, Naman Dhir and Robin Minz in check.
He conceded just a solitary boundary, ensuring MI never found the late acceleration they needed.
How Overton shut MI down
With six wickets in hand and five overs to go, MI were primed for a strong finish. Instead, they managed only 39 runs — with Overton’s two overs proving decisive.
He bowled with clarity and control, mixing sharp short balls with well-disguised off-cutters. The dismissal of Dhir proved pivotal — a slower ball that gripped the surface and forced a miscue at a crucial stage.
Against Pandya, Overton went hard and hostile. Bowling above 145 kmph, he cramped the MI captain for room and denied him any scoring rhythm. Even strike rotation became difficult as the pressure mounted.
The penultimate over summed it up: just four runs conceded, no boundaries, complete control.
A rapid evolution
Earlier in the season, Overton’s role at the death was a concern. Sunil Gavaskar had pointed out that CSK’s bowling — especially at the back end — could be their biggest weakness after a shaky start.
That concern now looks outdated.
Overton has evolved quickly, turning into a reliable option in crunch moments. His raw pace, improved variations and sharper execution have changed his role within the side. While his overall economy reads 9.04, it drops notably when excluding that one expensive outing in Bengaluru.
Since then, he has delivered impact performances, including a four-wicket haul against Delhi Capitals and a three-wicket effort against Sunrisers Hyderabad. With this win, CSK have revived their campaign and pushed themselves back into playoff contention. If they are to sustain that charge, Overton’s rise at the death could be the difference-maker.
