Cheap and charming: Offbeat hill stations in India for summer travel

5

With summer temperatures rising across India, travellers are moving away from crowded hotspots and seeking quieter, budget-friendly hill escapes.

Early trends point to a growing appetite for offbeat destinations that offer cooler climates, fewer crowds, and better value. According to Rikant Pittie, CEO and co-founder of EaseMyTrip, today’s travellers are prioritising meaningful, affordable experiences over checklist tourism — a shift that’s putting lesser-known regions in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kashmir, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh firmly on the travel map.

Shangarh, Himachal Pradesh

Hidden in the Sainj Valley, Shangarh is a serene alternative to Himachal’s busy hill towns. Its vast meadow, ringed by forests, sets the tone for slow travel — think nature walks, waterfalls, and short treks inside the Great Himalayan National Park. Combine it with nearby Shoja and Jibhi for an easy 3–4 day, budget-friendly trip.

Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

For those seeking raw Himalayan beauty, Tawang delivers. From the iconic Tawang Monastery to alpine lakes and the striking Nuranang Falls, the journey via Sela Pass is as memorable as the destination. Best visited between March–May or October–November.

Yusmarg, Jammu & Kashmir

A short drive from Srinagar, Yusmarg is all about quiet meadows, pine forests, and the gentle flow of the Doodh Ganga River. Ideal for slow walks and short treks, it’s also easy on the pocket, with homestays priced between ₹800 and ₹1,500.

Haflong, Assam

Haflong, Assam’s only hill station, offers misty landscapes and laid-back charm. The scenic Haflong Lake, nature trails, and nearby tribal villages make it perfect for unhurried travel. Reachable via Guwahati, it’s a great low-cost alternative to mainstream hill destinations.

Munsiyari, Uttarakhand

Set in the Pithoragarh district, Munsiyari is a hidden gem known for its sweeping views of the Panchachuli Peaks. Trekking routes like Khaliya Top, village walks, and stargazing experiences make it a rewarding escape. A 5–6 day trip can be planned within ₹8,000–₹10,000 via Kathgodam.
