India retained their position at the top of the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings after the latest annual update, continuing to lead the standings despite a slight drop in rating points.
The Shubman Gill-led side now sit on 118 rating points, five clear of second-placed New Zealand, while Australia remain third with 109 points in the updated rankings released by the International Cricket Council on Tuesday. The annual revision comes at a significant time with teams beginning to intensify their push towards qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.
“India remain at the pinnacle of the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings after the latest annual update, leading second-placed New Zealand by five points, while Australia retain third place,” the ICC said in its official release. India lost one rating point compared to the previous rankings cycle but still maintained a healthy cushion at the top. South Africa were among the biggest gainers, climbing to fourth place with 102 points and pushing Pakistan down to fifth with 98 points.
Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and England held on to their places in the top eight, while Bangladesh stayed ninth ahead of the West Indies.
The ICC also outlined the ranking system used for the latest update.
“The annual rankings update applies 100 percent weightage to matches played since May 2025, while matches from the previous two years are weighted at 50 percent,” the statement added.
Qualification race for 2027 World Cup heats up
The updated rankings have also sharpened focus on the qualification race for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Under ICC rules, the top eight teams in the ODI rankings as of March 31, 2027 will qualify directly for the tournament along with hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe.
“The top eight teams in the ICC Rankings as of March 31, 2027 will secure direct qualification alongside hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, who have automatically qualified,” the ICC said. Because South Africa have already qualified automatically as hosts, there remains a possibility for the ninth-ranked team to secure direct qualification as well if the Proteas stay inside the top eight.
Elsewhere in the rankings, Ireland climbed above Zimbabwe into 11th place, while the United States moved ahead of Scotland to claim 13th position. UAE also improved their standing after overtaking Canada to rise to 19th.
