US President Donald Trump said the United States and China agree that “Iran cannot have nuclear weapons” and that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open, following talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping during Trump’s three-day state visit to China amid the escalating West Asia conflict.
Lebanon, Israel extend ceasefire
Lebanon and Israel on Friday agreed to extend their ceasefire by 45 days despite renewed tensions, the US State Department said after mediating discussions between the two sides.
“The April 16 cessation of hostilities will be extended by 45 days to enable further progress,” State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said.
Fresh negotiations aimed at securing a permanent political settlement are scheduled for June 2 and 3, while the Pentagon will host military-level talks between delegations from both countries on May 29.
UAE rejects Iranian accusations
The United Arab Emirates rejected what it described as attempts by Iran to justify attacks targeting the Gulf nation after Tehran accused Abu Dhabi of playing an active role in the ongoing conflict.
Minister of State Khalifa bin Shaheen Al Marar reiterated the UAE’s “categorical rejection” of Iranian allegations and condemned what the statement called “Iranian terrorist attacks” directed at the UAE and other countries.
Iran eases Hormuz passage
Iranian state television reported that Tehran is allowing more ships to pass through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, saying the move follows acceptance by “many countries” of new legal protocols imposed by Iran.
Iran welcomes Chinese support
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Washington had sent messages indicating its willingness to continue negotiations, adding that Tehran would welcome assistance from any country capable of helping, especially China.
“We appreciate any country that has the ability to help, particularly China,” Araghchi said.
