Narine Inspires Kolkata’s Fightback With Another Masterclass

How many times has Sunil Narine rescued Kolkata Knight Riders just when they seemed to be slipping out of the contest? Over the years, the answer has become almost impossible to count.

Time and again, Narine has delivered for KKR in pressure moments, which explains why the franchise continues to place unwavering trust in him across tournaments around the world. On Wednesday, the veteran spinner once again turned back the clock with a spell that reminded everyone why he remains one of the finest T20 bowlers of his generation. Narine finished with stunning figures of 4-0-13-1 and played a decisive role in KKR’s crucial four-wicket win over Mumbai Indians.

While Mumbai had already stumbled to 46 for four inside the powerplay, Narine’s job was to ensure there was no recovery. On a pitch offering grip and uneven pace, he completely strangled the innings through the middle overs and denied Mumbai any chance of regaining momentum.

NARINE SHUT THE GAME DOWN

T20 cricket rarely allows bowlers to dominate for long stretches, which made Narine’s spell even more extraordinary. Across four overs, he conceded only one boundary and bowled 16 dot balls, suffocating Mumbai’s batters with relentless accuracy.

Neither Tilak Varma nor Hardik Pandya found any rhythm against him. Narine mixed his off-breaks and carrom balls expertly, forcing both batters into uncertainty. Tilak repeatedly looked rooted to the crease while trying to pick the variation, while Hardik struggled to create room or generate any scoring opportunities.

Even when Tilak briefly relieved the pressure with a slog sweep for six, Narine immediately tightened the screws again. The pressure eventually told on Hardik, whose defence was breached by a beautifully delivered off-break that spun sharply back into the stumps.

Corbin Bosch also found himself trapped by Narine’s control. Dot balls kept mounting, scoring options disappeared and Mumbai slowly drifted towards a below-par total on a surface where batting never looked comfortable.

KKR STILL HAVE WORK LEFT

Narine’s brilliance has been central to KKR’s late resurgence this season. After struggling badly in the first half of the campaign, Kolkata have now won six of their last seven matches to stay alive in the playoff race.

Their season, however, now hinges on one final showdown against Delhi Capitals at Eden Gardens on May 24.

By the time KKR take the field, they will already know whether qualification is still possible. If Rajasthan Royals win earlier in the day, Kolkata’s campaign will effectively come to an end. But if results fall in their favour, KKR will enter the match knowing victory could still take them into the playoffs.

And if there is one player Kolkata would trust in a must-win encounter, it is Narine.

The veteran spinner has historically enjoyed facing Delhi, claiming 31 wickets against them at an economy rate of just 6.64. With the Capitals also struggling for consistency this season and conditions at Eden expected to once again aid spin, Narine could prove decisive all over again.

KKR’s playoff hopes are still hanging by a thread. But as long as Narine continues to weave his magic, Kolkata will believe there is still life left in their campaign.
