Ajit Doval, Myanmar President Hold Key Talks on Border Security, Connectivity and Regional Stability

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Sunday met Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi for wide-ranging discussions on border security, regional connectivity and strategic cooperation, as India and Myanmar sought to deepen engagement on issues of mutual concern.

The meeting took place shortly after the Myanmar President arrived in the national capital on a five-day official visit and ahead of his bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled for Monday.

According to official inputs, the discussions focused on security challenges along the India-Myanmar border, including insurgent activity, illegal immigration and cross-border trafficking. Both sides reviewed the existing security situation and explored measures to strengthen cooperation in intelligence sharing, defence coordination and counter-terrorism efforts.

The India-Myanmar border, which stretches over 1,600 kilometres across four northeastern states, remains a critical area of cooperation between the two countries due to concerns related to insurgency, smuggling networks and the movement of illegal migrants.

Connectivity projects aimed at improving regional integration also figured prominently in the talks. The two sides reviewed the progress of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, initiatives seen as crucial to enhancing trade, people-to-people ties and connectivity between India and Southeast Asia under New Delhi’s Act East Policy.

Sources indicated that the leaders also exchanged views on Myanmar’s internal security situation and broader geopolitical developments in the region. Discussions reportedly touched upon the growing strategic footprint of China in Myanmar and its implications for regional balance and India’s security interests.

Officials said the engagement reflected India’s broader approach of promoting stability, security and economic development in its neighbourhood through sustained diplomatic and security cooperation.

The talks also highlighted the importance both countries place on maintaining peace along their shared border while advancing infrastructure, trade and development partnerships.

President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in India on Saturday and began his visit with a stop at the Mahabodhi Temple in Gaya before travelling to New Delhi. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising ministers, senior government officials and business leaders.

His visit comes less than two months after assuming office following Myanmar’s parliamentary elections and is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to review bilateral ties and explore new avenues of cooperation across security, connectivity and economic sectors.
